When was the last time you washed your sheets? If you’re wracking your brain to remember, it might be time to toss them in the wash—because most people aren’t cleaning their bedding often enough.
Why Bedding Needs Frequent Washing
While your bed may look clean, it’s quietly collecting sweat, body oils, skin cells, dust mites, and even fungi. Over time, these build up and can contribute to allergies, skin irritation, and unpleasant odours.
Each night, you shed thousands of skin cells and sweat around 200 millilitres—even more if you sleep hot or with pets. And all that creates the perfect environment for bacteria and dust mites to thrive.
So… How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?
Sheets & Pillowcases: At least once a week. This keeps skin oils, sweat, and allergens under control.
Doonas & Blankets: Every 2–3 months. Use a doona cover and wash it weekly with your sheets.
Pillows: Every 3–6 months. Yes, pillows can go in the wash (check the label). They can hold a surprising amount of grime and mites.
Mattress Protector: Once a month. It’s your first line of defense for your mattress—don’t neglect it.
Special Cases Where You Should Wash Bedding More Often:
You sleep naked or sweat heavily
You or your partner are sick
Pets sleep in the bed
You have allergies or asthma
You eat in bed (yes, crumbs count!)
Tips for Fresher Bedding:
Wash with hot water (at least 60°C) to kill germs
Dry bedding thoroughly to prevent mildew
Use hypoallergenic detergent if you have sensitive skin
Rotate your pillow and doona every few months
Bottom Line:
If your bedding only hits the laundry every few weeks, you’re not alone—but you are overdue. Weekly washing helps you sleep cleaner, breathe easier, and feel better. Your skin (and sinuses) will thank you.
Time to hit the laundry? Your bed deserves it.
