Your fridge is one of the most used appliances in your home—but often one of the most overlooked when it comes to deep cleaning. Spills, leaks, and crumbs can build up quickly, creating an unhygienic environment for your food. Here’s how to clean your fridge shelves like a professional—thoroughly, efficiently, and without missing a step.

Step 1: Empty Your Fridge (Completely)

Start by taking everything out of the fridge. This not only makes it easier to clean but also gives you a chance to check expiry dates and toss anything that’s spoiled or questionable.

  • Use a cooler bag to keep perishable items cold during cleaning.

  • Group items by type so it’s easier to restock later.

Step 2: Remove Shelves & Drawers

Most modern fridge shelves and drawers are removable. Carefully slide them out and let them come to room temperature before washing. Washing cold glass with hot water can cause it to crack.

Step 3: Wash with Warm, Soapy Water

Use a non-abrasive sponge or cloth with dish soap and warm water to clean shelves and drawers.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals—mild soap is enough.

  • Rinse thoroughly and let air dry, or dry with a clean towel.

For extra sanitation, wipe down with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water.

Step 4: Clean the Inside Walls and Seals

While your shelves are drying, clean the inside of the fridge:

  • Use the same soap and vinegar solution.

  • Pay attention to corners, grooves, and door seals—crumbs and grime often hide there.

A soft toothbrush can help get into those tight spaces.

Optional: Natural Deodorising Trick

Before reassembling, place a small open jar of baking soda or a few slices of lemon in the fridge to neutralise any odours.

Step 5: Reassemble and Restock

Once everything is clean and dry:

  • Return shelves and drawers to their proper places.

  • Wipe down condiment bottles before putting them back.

  • Group food items for easier access and organisation.

Pro Tips

  • Clean your fridge every 1–2 months.

  • Place paper towels in drawers to catch future spills.

  • Label leftovers with dates to avoid forgotten food.

Keeping your fridge clean isn’t just about appearances—it extends the life of your food, prevents bacteria build-up, and helps your appliance run more efficiently.
